He was not trying to break a Guinness Record, he only wanted to light a candle for his departed loved ones.
47-year-old scavenger Ceferino Angco was rescued by members of the Bantay Dagat after he was seen floating around 8a.m. on Sunday off the waters of Talisay City.
Angco explained that he wanted to go home for All Souls’ Day to visit the tomb of his parents and light a candle for them.
He didn’t have enough money to pay for a boat ticket and was embarrassed to ask or borrow money and he didn’t want to do anything illegal so he did the unthinkable, swim across the Cebu strait and get to Bohol.
He started swimming at 11p.m.on Saturday night and after 9 hours the Bantay Dagat members found him holding on to a styrofoam off the waters of Talisay City, really tired and shivering.
Angco said that he first arrived in Cebu in 2011 with a cousin to look for a job but unluckily he never found a job, instead he has been scouring through garbage and landfills to be able to buy food and other needs.
Talisay City councilor Antonio Bacaltos Jr. heard about his story and bought him a boat ticket so he could go home to Bohol, he left at 1:30p.m. on Monday on board a fast craft.
