Wednesday, Oct. 31, India unveiled the world’s tallest statue standing at 597 feet. It is a bronze statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an independence movement leader who later served as the country’s first deputy prime minister.
The $430 million statue which took over 3 and a half years to build was unveiled on the late leader’s 143rd birth anniversary led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Dubbed as the world’s grandest statue with 2 high-speed elevators leading to a viewing gallery that can accommodate up to 200 people which includes a selfie corner.

The statue is said to withstand a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. Hotels, restaurants and museums are being developed around the statue that would soon cater to local and international tourists.

Patel known as the Iron Man is popular in Indian history books, but not as well-known outside the country such as independence icons like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Born to family of farmers in 1875, he played a big role in India’s gaining independence from Britain in 1947. He was able to persuade the rulers of 565 semiautonomous states to join the new nation through diplomacy and threats of violence.
