JAPAN: Youth suicide rate highest in 30 years

Based on a new government report,  more Japanese teenagers and children committed suicide between 2016 and 2017, the highest since 1986.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Education 250 elementary and high school students killed themselves in that year for various reasons that include bullying, stress, and family issues. 
This has been the highest since1986, when 268 pupils died.
    Previously, the government  was able to record an annual spike in suicides at the start of the new school year, on September 1.
    According to the National Police Agency that though the rate for youth suicide went up last fiscal year, but the total number of suicides in Japan dropped to 21,321 in 2017, from a peak of 34,427 in 2003.
    In 2016, Japan’s government announced a plan to cut the country’s suicide rate by 30{a21e6da08482d397a607007d7d78265068006afe8b45ef39eb0952d5fa730076} by 2026, especially the youth. The plan includes launching a 24-hour helpline and providing counselors for every elementary and junior high school in the country.
