MANILA, Philippines – The Mamadsali and Ayup families’ long-running clan war has finally ended, thanks to the 33rd Infantry Battalion headed by battalion commander Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc. The army unit was instrumental in the successful negotiation for peace between clashing families.
On November 8, at the 33rd IB headquarters in a kanduli ceremony, the family patriarchs Mamadsali Pandapatan, 50, and Jorge Ayup, 55, finally agreed to make peace. It was witnessed by Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu and 6th Infantry Division Assistant Commander Antonio Sugarol.

It was a 5-year negotiations that started in 2013, facilitated by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
The feud between clans started over ownership of a 10-hectare rice farm in Lumabao village in the town of General SK Pendatun. Pandapatan’s grandparents originally owned the lot but Ayup showed certificates that apparently distributed it to 4 descendants.
According to Cabunoc Ayup’s association with the MILF has turned the village into a battleground of the MILF breakaway group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF). He added that up to 32 BIFF members surrendered after the resolution of the 5 clan wars.

The same battalion was also instrumental in resolving feuds between Samama and Saotin clans, the Sinomagan with Mohammad clan, and Delba with Saligan clan.
