‘Kidnap’ gang member dies in Zambo Norte clash

ZAMBOANGA CITY — An alleged member of a kidnap-for-ransom gang was killed in a clash with government forces in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, military officials said Wednesday.

Lt. Col. Danilo Ambe, the Army’s 42nd Infantry Battalion commander, said the clash occurred in Barangay Sipakit, Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Ambe said a team of soldiers and policemen were conducting security patrol when they clashed with five followers of the Jamilon Tukalan group whose members are involved in kidnapping and extortion activities in Zamboanga del Norte.
The shootout resulted in the death of one of the group’s members, identified only as Jul Hassan.
Ambe said the troops recovered a .45 pistol, a caliber .38 revolver, a grenade, and a cellular phone from the clash site.
Col. Bagnus Gaerlan, Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade commander, said the troops will “continuously operate together with the PNP (Philippine National Police) to quell lawless armed groups in our area of responsibility.” (PNA)
