Team Cebu City Girls Beach Volleyball defeated its elimination round tormentor Pontevedra, Negros Occidental in the championship game held at the Joe III Garde in Villa Arevalo District in Iloilo City before noon today. Kizil Quijote and Pie Algoso rebounded from a two sets loss last Thursday to Pontevedra with a heart-stopping 27-25; 20-22 and 15-8 to win the gold medal for Cebu City in the Girls 14-U competition.
“I just told them to relax and stay focused. And always look at me so I can give them plays and instructions,” coach Jordan Paca said. In the opening set, Cebu City needed to wither their Negros Occidental squad in six deuces before winning 27-25. However, Cebu City failed to sustain its first set magic as they lost a toughly fought second set 20-22.
The determined Team Cebu City cranked up a strong start to secure the top of the podium finish with a 15-8 scores in the deciding set. “I told the girls to forget about the loss and stay focus and do what we did in training. Luckily the girls responded and it turned out all right in the deciding set,” Paca continued.
Cebu City lost to Pontevedra in the elimination round 21-17 and 21-18, their only loss on their way to the gold medal finish. Sipalay City, also of Negros Occidental bagged the bronze medal. However, Cebu City was still trailing by 15 gold medals to the host team Iloilo City at the top of the medal standings, as of the 2PM medal count today. Iloilo accumulated a total 57 gold medals, 49 silvers and 44 bronze medals.
Cebu City had 42-55-63 medals respectively to their treasure chest. Cebu Province is at third place as they collected 38 golds, 38 silvers and 52 bronze medals; the Province of Negros Occidental was at the fourth place with 30-18-17 haul and Lapu-Lapu City sneaked from behind to make the fifth place with 28-14-25 collection.
Lapu-Lapu City rose to the top 5 after dominating the Arnis competition, where they won 24 gold medals, nine silvers and 13 bronzes in the Forms, Padded Sticks and Live Sticks competitions. Iloilo City finished behind with its 12-9-10 winnings and Cebu City at third place with 9-7-18 haul. RCM
