CONSOLACION gave Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) grand slam winner coach Gary Cortes a rough welcome as the Sarok Weavers defeated Mandaue City inside its own house, 86-85, in the 6th District action of the Cebu Governor’s Cup 2019 – Inter-Cities/Municipalities 21-Under Basketball Tournament held at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Center last night. Mandaue had a good start, pulling an early 16-9 lead in the opening quarter and controlled the game onwards, except for the final four minutes, when the Weavers made a rousing comeback to frustrate the home squad, and tallied its second win.
Cortes and Team Mandaue City will have to look for their first win in Cordova on Sunday. John Lloyd Pepito scored the game high 16 points to lead Consolacion scorers, which also had Brevin Keith Padayogdog, Kin Dayday contributing 14 points each and John Paulo Dalumpines adding 10 points while Kenneth Brillo scored the game high 20 points, Gabriel Cometa added 14 and Lemuel Jake Gonzaga finished with 13 for Mandaue’s losing debut. Meanwhile, the Oslob Whale Sharks did not frustrate its home crowd this time as they pulled a pulsating 79-70 win over its neighbours Santander Kangaroos in the main game of the 2nd District competition at the Oslob Municipal Gym. Renzo Dumnik Abines made 10 straight points for Oslob midway in the fourth frame to help the home team climb from a 63-68 deficit in the final five minutes of the game.
The Whale Sharks were actually leading from the onset, building an 11-point lead 35-24 in the second period when the combination of Jaybert Olahay and Jake Matthews Cabigon punished the defense of the Kangaroos in the second period. Spyke Miramon then went to work to help Benito Luzano and Bryle Andrei Puntual powered Santander to a 16-6 blast to take 68-65 lead. That was when Abines displayed his hard-court savvy and scored seven straight points as Oslob took back the lead, 72-68. Santander’s last stand was the put-back basket of Puntual at the 2:36 mark, but it proved to be the last basket of the Kangaroos in the game. Olahay finished with 21 points, including 11 in the opening quarter, Abines had 18 and Cabigon added 14. Luzano topscored for Santander with 21 points, Puntual added 15 and Miramon tallied 12. Alcoy Siloy and Argao shared the leadership in the 2nd District competition after picking their second win in as many games.
Argao beat Siempre Samboan 74-64 in the opening match while Alcoy dominated Boljoon with a 72-56 finish an hour and 30 minutes later.
