By Rommel C. Manlosa

SAMBOAN dropped a series of spurts when their opponents were already losing steam for a 93-79 win over the visiting Alcoy Siloy to clinch a seat to the next round in the Second District competition of the Cebu Governor’s Cup 2019 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament in Samboan Municipal Gym last night.

The win was Samboan’s fourth in five games while the loss was Alcoy’s second also in five games, which gave the home squad a slot to the next round. However, the ranking is still not certain as Argao, which had a 3-1 card, still has a game to play at home on Saturday against Santander Kangaroos.

Santander would be all psyched up in that game after scoring its first win, 70-68, against Boljoon in the opening game. Argao’s loss would give chance to Alcoy owing to its 86-76 win over the former last Friday.

Alcoy seemed to have things under control as they kept Samboan at bay until the middle of the third quarter. The visiting team was even leading by as much as 13-points, 36-23 before the shots of Samboan finally found its marks as they went to outscore Alcoy 21-10 to close the first half at 44-46.

A short seesaw battle for the lead ensued early in the third before Samboan finally took control of the game when Paul Andrew Catipay sank back-to-back triple to ignite a 10-0 run, which gave them a 10-point lead, 67-57 lead.

The winded Alcoy managed to cut the double digit margin down to five, 68-73 only to meet another series of spurts as Samboan went for the kill with a finishing 20-11 kick.

Evens Manolong who posed the biggest problem for Alcoy down low scored 27 points including 13 in the final quarter John Michael Rosal added 17, Jill Luage added 15, Catipay finished with 13 and Raphael Dinampo had 11 points for Samboan’s march while Renley de Leon scored the game high 30 points, Mark Lester Alfanta scattered six triple of his 20 points and Hance Estrera struggled with 19 points for Alcoy’s losing fate.

Meanwhile, Naga City Electrifiers moved within a win away from clinching a slot to the next round for the 1st District competition after beating San Fernando Spartans 73-67 while Carcar City Lechoneros handed Sibonga Pillars another defeat 78-61 in Carcar City Sports Complex.

The Electrifiers could accomplish it tonight as they play Minglanilla Archangels in Minglanilla Sports Complex at 7:30 PM while defending champions Talisay City Aquastars will try to keep an unblemished record that dated back last year as they play the Lechoneros in the opening match at 6PM

Tuburan on the other hand sealed the top of the heap in the 3rd District after handing Barili 106-75 in Tuburan at home and in Madridejos Municipal gym in Bantayan Island, Bogo City rebounded with a 78-68 win over Tabuelan, San Remigio beating Santa Fe 81-77 and host team Madridejos drubbing Tabogon 102-90 to stay clean in three games.
