Minglanilla scores comeback win against Sogod for second win in the quarters

By Rommel C. Manlosa

MINGLANILLA Archangels struck hard in the final period to score another victory, this time a come-from-behind 73-72 cliff-hanger over the home team Sogod in the ongoing quarterfinal actions of the Cebu Governor’s Cup 2019 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament held in Sogod Sports Complex.

The inaugural champions were trailing all the way but rallied hard in the final quarter to pull a thrilling victory that put them in a good position for a semi-finals seat.

Sogod had a rousing start, outscoring the visitors from the onset on its way to lead 26-14 at the end of the opening quarter.

Minglanilla got their acts together but its 19-point effort in the second period was not enough to wrest the lead away from the home squad.

Sogo was still sharp on the first three minutes of the final period as they took a 50-43 lead to a 59-45 cushion before the match slowly slipped away from their hands.

Coach Edito Salacut used the combined efforts of Matthew King Cabansay, Alvier Alforque, Lyle Eredera, and Justin Nebril to counter the hot hands of Meljay Cuizon. Cabansay’s basket at the final 23 seconds gave the Archangels the lead for good.

Eredera scored the game-high 18 points and Cabansay finished with 10 for Minglanilla while Cuizon and Christian Rivera scored 16 points each and Rhodnie Bregente and Chrislee Rivera contributed 12 points respectively as Sogod suffered its second loss in as many games.

Meanwhile, defending champions Talisay City Aquastars debuted in the quarterfinals with a 104-79 victory over Tabuelan.

The first district champions saw an early explosion of Jay Deiparine who scored 11 points as Talisay City built a 28-23 after the first quarter.

Tabuelan managed to stay within the distance behind the efforts of Jansher Salubre who scored 22 of his game-high 30 points in the first half for the 4th District runner-up.

Talisay City then put the game away by outscoring Tabuelan 53-35 to complete a 25-point route.

Keaton Clyde Taburnal scored 23 points, Deiparine added 19, Ronan Briones had 17, Kendrick Abarquez finished with 12 points and Clark Louis Ruedas made 11 points for Talisay City while beside Salubre, John Dave Arnado made 18 points and Steve Anthony Sabrido who tallied 15 points were the other Tabuelan players to finish in double digit.

Meanwhile, John Paulo Dalumpines was back with a vengeance after serving a one-game suspension as he dropped 14 points to help Consolacion Sarok Weavers score its second win 77-67 over Alegria.

Brevin Keith Padayogdog was the other Consolacion player to score in double-digit with 14 while Rojan Montemayor and Christian Jay Garcia scored 20 points each for Alegria’s second loss.
