CEBU CITY, PHILIPPINES- The elections is over but its not over yet for those who were caught for alleged “vote buying.”
Central Visayas Police Regional Director Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas announced that the police will pursue the filing of criminal cases against those arrested by the police prior and during the election day itself last Monday, May 13.
Except those in Danao City where a Barangay Captain was arrested by a lawyer candidate (citizen arrest) inside a resort, all the rest of 12 incidents of alleged vote-buying in the region will be pursued.
Sinas said the police have evidence against those who will be charged for the alleged election offense.
“Some of them naay documents, naay recovered items, majority naay video footage to strengthen our case against them. We have cash money, listahan ug kanang mga pinapirma-pirmahan nila,” Sinas said in a press briefing inside the Camp Sergio Osmena here.
Among those who will face charges are the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officers in Barangay Cogon Ramos who allegedly were caught in the act of distributing money, an allegation which was denied by those involved, however, claiming that they received prize money for their basketball tournament.
Including the Danao incident, the 12 cases of alleged vote-buying in the region involved 3 incidents each in Cebu Province and Siquijor, 2 each in Cebu City and Bohol and 1 in Negros Oriental.
Atty. Mike Enriquez, a candidate for Vice Mayor in Danao City, arrested Looc Barangay Captain Jose Cane for allegedly giving cash money to two individuals inside the Costanera Resort while the elections were ongoing.
Danao City Comelec registrar Atty. Ferdinand Gujilde advised the camp of Enriquez however to release the barangay official and just pursue the regular filing of a case against the suspect.
“I talked to them and advised them to just follow the regular filing of the case,” Gujilde told iNews.ph in an interview.
Cane is a supporter of Bakud, the local political party of the Durano’s in the 5th district of Cebu Province where Danao City is its base.
Enriquez is the running mate of businesswoman Eleanore Duterte, a distant relative of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, who ran against incumbent City Mayor Ramonito Durano.
Eleanore failed but her son, Red Duterte, was just proclaimed as newly elected 5th district Provincial Board (PB) member.
The Durano’s also failed to kept their stronghold where they lorded for several decades, since 1949, as incumbent Congressman Ramon “Red “ Durano VI was beaten by former Liloan Mayor Duke Frasco, the son-in-law of Governor-elect Gwen Garcia.
