CEBU City, Philippines – The University of Cebu Webmasters scored its third straight win in as many games after handing the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers an 84-79 loss in the CESAFI-Partner’s Cup Pre-Season Tournament 2019 at the Cebu Coliseum Sunday evening. Tristan Albina lead UC to victory as the former member of the University of the Visayas Green Lancers scattered 17 points including eight in the second period that helped the Webmasters build a 35-27 lead at the halftime.
UC was heading to a lopsided victory as they built a 19-point lead 58-39, midway to the third period with Shane Menina and John Jabello combining for 13 points. However, USPF started to get their acts together as the combined efforts of Aljie Mendez, Karl Langahin and Lyndon Colin pulled the Panthers within 70-72 with less than two minutes left in the game.
A triple from Jabello gave UC an elbow room while Greggy Sarahina scored a lay-up at the other end to pull USPF behind 72-75. But that proved to be the last time the Panthers could give as Luigi Gabisan scored two baskets for the Webmasters to avoid the upset ax.
Albina scored the game-high 17 points, Menina added 16 and Jabello tallied 13 points for UC while Mendez topped USPF with 13 points, Lagahin contributed 11 and Edwin Vallarta had 10 points. In the Juniors competition, Christopher Isabelo scored seven points in the final two minutes including a clutch triple and a jumper to save the USPF Baby Panthers from defeat for a thrilling 75-69 over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars.
