CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—The San Sebastian College-Recoletos senior high school team bucked the odds in taking home the championship title of the 8th Felix Manzano National Inter-Collegiate basketball tournament after scoring a whopping upset versus the favored University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 89-81, at the Don Carlos Astrodome.
The SSC-R Baby Stags wormed its way into the final round after being trapped in a three-way tie for the second spot alongside the Holy Cross College Crusaders of Davao and the Agro-Industrial Davao team after they all finished the eliminations with identical 2-2 win-loss slates each.
San Sebastian though emerged as the team with the highest quotient amongst the three, thus setting the showdown against the UV Green Lancers in the championship match. In the battle for the third place, the Agro-Industrial quintet massacred the HCC Crusaders, 110-79, to take home the bacon and the P30,000 cash while the HCC Crusaders pocketed P20,000 cash and the fourth place honors.
San Sebastian which took home P75,000 cash and the bragging rights controlled the match at the opening buzzer courtesy of the hot shooting of Bukidnon-native Milo Janao, who logged in 16 markers including three treys while point guard Jopet Arciaga finished the game with 15 baskets and three 3-point shots.
The Green Lancers, which took home P50,000 cash for their part were carried by point guard Gabriel Cometa, who conked in 18 points, while Jancork Cabahug and Heinrich Maestre tallied 14 and 12 points each, respectively. San Sebastian showed its dominance over UV right from the start after finishing the opening period with a 24-18 edge before the Green Lancers briefly took the lead at the start of the second period, 31-26, after a 13-2 blitzkrieg with Cometa at the helm.
SSC, however, retaliated with its own rally and repossessed the edge at the half, 46-44 before increasing this to 70-63 at the end of the third period. The last time the Green Lancers went ahead was in the final 2:03 of the game after a three-point bomb by Melvin Butohan, 81-80, before the Baby Stags overtook them for the bug win./JSV
