DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines- The Dumaguete City police are tracking down the person who made a hoax bomb threat of the Silliman University here. “We are trying to trace who he is,” Lt. Col. Reyman Tolentin, the newly designated Dumaguete City Chief of Police told iNews.Ph.

Tolentin revealed that the threat came from somebody who posted it on Facebook and they are seeking the help of the PNP Cybercrime experts to identify the person. The hoax bomb threat comes from a certain “Nelson Tan” which prompted the Silliman University administration to suspend classes last Friday, August 2, 2019 (it was the second suspension of classes as there was an earlier hoax bomb threat that also came from Tan).

After the PNP SWAT team and explosives and ordnance experts funneled the entire school premises and cleared it of bombs, the SU admin announced that campus activities resumed last Saturday and regular classes will go on as scheduled today. Tolentin said once the identity of Tan will be traced by the cybercrime experts, criminal charges will be filed.

The portion of the statement of SU admin said,” To ensure that the University continues to be safe and secure, Silliman University (SU) referred to the Philippine National Police (PNP) for investigation this morning a security concern. PNP and allied units conducted a thorough inspection of the campus and found it to be free and clear of any threat.

The Silliman community is assured that additional security measures have been put in place for the safety and security of everyone. Government authorities and SU are in close coordination to apprehend those who are responsible for the unnecessary disturbance on campus.

Campus activities will continue as scheduled effective 7:00 a.m. on August 3, 2019.” For his part, Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office officer-in-charge Colonel Angelito Dumangeng said he ordered a thorough investigation for the matter as the security of the students, the faculty and all personnel of SU is of utmost importance. “Security is very important. We are doing our best to identify the hoax bomb source,” Dumangeng told iNews.Ph.

Founded in 1901, Silliman University is considered as the oldest American University in the Philippines.
