CEBU CITY, Philippines- A portion of the building where the old Social Security System (SSS) was located collapsed at 2 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2019, along Gorordo Avenue, Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City.
The building was owned by the Suarez brothers No one was reported injured in the incident as of press time but authorities were still further investigating the scene to check if no one was indeed hurt and to also find out what caused the incident.
Initial reports from the Fuente Police Station revealed the structure was near a construction site where a condotel was being built. Guards from a nearby bank reported the incident to the authorities. The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Center (CCDRMMC) said no one was injured as the 42 employees of the business outsource processing office which is located at the adjacent building of the collapsed structure were able to evacuate immediately when they saw a crack from the building.
DOLE also announced the temporary stoppage of the work in the BPO company and also in a dialysis center in the area. The police are now on the area manning the site to prevent any untoward incidents from happening. Office of the Building Officials (OBO) has yet to determine the cause of the collapse.
Cebu City councilor Jerry Guardo said that they will still investigate the main cause of the incident. He also added that he wants to have a session as soon as possible with the council, stakeholders and contractors to discuss the case and to avoid this kind of damage for the future projects in Cebu City./HT Lenis
