FIRST PHILIPPINE SITTING VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY HELD

First-ever Sitting Volleyball Tournament

CEBU CITY, Philippines- Not only historic but the first-ever Philippine Accessible Disability Services (PADS Inc.) Adaptive Sports Sitting Volleyball Tournament is flavored with international blend. Reason: the highly respected volleyball coach, Eric Hodgson of USA Volleyball flew in just for the event.

Hodgson who started the idea of coming up with sitting volleyball along with PADS about four years back said his passion for volleyball was developed through the years. He was first engaged in recreational basketball in his home state of Arizona but he later shifted to Volleyball when his daughter played college volleyball where he later became coach and now as Director for Outreach of USA Volleyball, Arizona.

The principle of teamwork in volleyball Hodgson said is what that makes him hook for the sports. “I just love the idea of the team work that is involve in this sport. I just love the team work, not one person can control the game, its pure teamwork,” Hogdson told Inews.Ph inside the Southwestern University (SWU- Phinma) Coliseum where the day long tournament was held today, October 4, 2019. PADS, Inc.

Executive Director John Paul “JP” Maunes inspired all the participants to be proud of themselves for being the athletes that made history for sitting volleyball in the country. “This a historic event because we are marking the first sitting volleyball tournament in the Philippines.

So this is one for the books. So you have your names as the first athletes to have participated in this tournament,” Maunes said in his brief speech. Gab Labra, PADS Inc. Sports program coordinator said that they intend to replicate sitting volleyball in other places in the country, even outside of Cebu where PADS is based. PADS Inc. also formed the highly successful PADS Dragonboat Racing Team that became champion in the recent 14th International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Nations Championships in Pattaya, Thailand.

The PADS organized Philippine Dragon Boat Team won four (4) gold medals in the multi-nation tournament held last August 20-25, 2019. In the Ist PADS Adaptive Sports Sitting Volleyball Tournament five local teams participated; Datu Lapulapu Team of Lapulapu City, Cordova Team of the Municipality of Cordova, Mommy Ty Spikes Team, SWU Phinma Rehab Science Team and the Breast Cancer Survivors (BCS) of Cebu.

Among those who figured well in the tournament is Daisy Omega of Datu Lapulapu Team, a polio victim who is working as HR supervisor of a Cebu City advertising firm. Omega is also a member of PADS Dragon Boat Team who won in the Sandugo 2019 Dragon Boat Festival in Tagbilaran City. The tournament is also being supported by the Lions Club Cebu Magellan Chapter, the organizers said./AAJ
