Pres. Rodrigo Duterte has condemned the killing yesterday of a Dumaguete City-based broadcaster who was on his way to work. “We would like to condemn the killing of the broadcaster/block timer Dindo Generoso.

The President has directed the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and to prosecute those behind the killing,” Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters in Manila. Generoso, 67, was shot by a riding in tandem gunman in Barangay Piapi as he was driving his brown Hyundai Elantra past 7 a.m. to supposedly anchor his commentary program in 96.7 DyEM/FM Bai radio.

Police Regional Office (PRO7) Director Brig. Gen. Valeriano De Leon said they are initially looking at three possible motives of the killing. “I have already ordered a thorough investigation of this case. All angles will be looked into to determine the motive of this attack against Dindo Generoso.

We are on top of the situation” de Leon said in a media statement. Sources privy to the investigation revealed that among the motives that are being looked into is retaliation from local politicians who were subjects of the hard-hitting commentary of Generoso who himself had a stint in politics.

Generoso is also a “cousin” of Conrado “Ding” Generoso, then a senatorial candidate in the midterm election last May who was formerly the spokesman of the drafting committee formed by Pres. Duterte that pushed for federalism in the country. (Conrado in his Facebook account called Dindo his “pinsan” as he also closely followed the broad daylight killing).

Also being looked into is the reported family land dispute that involved the broadcaster and the possibility that local New People’s Army (NPA) hitmen who turned themselves as “gun for hires” by some vested interest groups might have a hand in it.

In May last year, another radio block timer in Dumaguete, Edmund Sistoso was gunned down after he disembarked from a tricycle on his way home. Former Negros Oriental Provincial Police Director Tacaca Raul Tacaca has identified a certain Rene Bustamante, reportedly a high-ranking NPA leader in Negros Oriental as the alleged mastermind in the killing of Sestoso.

One of the alleged perpetrators in the Sistoso killing who also rode on a motorcycle was allegedly a relative of Bustamante who however was subsequently killed. Generoso who ran as Dumaguete City mayor in 2013 is reportedly a staunch supporter of a reclamation project of the Dumaguete City local government which has been recently stopped by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The radio program of Generoso called “Konsensya sa Probinsya” is reportedly an extension of the local LGU’s public information arm that is avidly promoting the programs of Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo. Undersecretary Joel Egco, the executive director of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) is closely monitoring the investigation and the PRO7 has been updating him.

“We are now cooperating with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) for the immediate solution of this. We will not stop until those involved are brought to justice,” Gen. De Leon further said. Justice Secretary Medardo Guevarra, PTFoMS chief, also announced the creation of a DOJ special investigation committee that will investigate the killing of Generoso.
