CEBU CITY, Philippines – As expected Mischka finished the elimination round unscathed to top the Men’s Division competition of the 2020 Mayor Edgardo C. Labella Volleyball Cup, Friday night, Jan. 10,  at the Cebu City Sports Institute in Sawang Calero.
Mischka withered the strong challenge of another selection team Sports Yu, 2-1, in a grueling battle of iron nerves and volleyball wits.
Mischka which is powered by the former Abellana National School spiker and the reigning NCAA Men’s Volleyball MVP Joebert Almodiel of the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, proved too tough down the deciding match to frustrate the upset-minded Sports Yu.
Mischka had the game covered in the opening set, but its unforced errors and the opponent’s service aces cost them a 25-21 loss. However, the top seeds regrouped and rebounded with a 25-23 win in the second set to force a deciding third set.
The third set was a test for both squads as neither team budged before the breaks of the match went Mischka’s way for a 29-27 win.
This was only the second game that Mischka was pushed to the limit. The first was against the Fiesta People/Cebu Institute of Technology-University Spiking Wildcats on Jan. 9, 28-26; 21-25; 25-20.
In today’s (Jan. 11) semifinal games, Mischka will play the reigning CESAFI champions Southwestern University-Phinma Spiking Cobras at 7 PM while Sports Yu will try to score a repeat over Fiesta People/CIT-U at 8 PM.
Meanwhile, the Sisi Rondina lead Team Maria’s topped the Women’s Division following a tie-breaker count-back.
Team Maria’s settled for a triple tie with the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Lady Panthers and Harbor Pilot Lady Dockers with 4-1 win-loss each.
On the tie-breaker method, Rondina’s squad and the Lady Panthers were still tied that was resolved through the number of sets won. Team Maria’s edged USPF on this tie-breaker method four points to three.
Team Maria will play the SWU-Phinma Lady Cobras at 4 PM while USPF will try to break the defense of the Lady Dockers at 5 PM. RCM
