The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) urged the local government units to distribute family planning supplies or contraceptives to last for the quarantine period

The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) is calling on couples affected by the enhanced community quarantine to discuss family planning as well as responsibilities. POPCOM highly urged the LGU’s to give family planning supplies and contraceptives such as pills and condoms due to the number of ‘unplanned pregnancies’ that are expected to increase due to the enhanced community quarantine.

Now that the government is urging the public to stay indoors because of the COVID-19 threat, POPCOM said this is a great opportunity for families to discuss the responsibilities of parents and homeowners. “We are uncertain as to when the health emergency caused by COVID-19 will abate.

As such, we do not want to add on to the current situation with another possible crisis caused by unplanned pregnancies as they could bear added weight to our already strained medical institutions, ” Usec Juan Antonio Perez said.

According to him, the number of unplanned pregnancies often increases when there is a calamity in which spouses and cohorts are long-lived.
