Exciting December boxing affairs; 3 events in span of one week!

This early December is shaping to be a busy boxing month for Cebu. With three slambang boxing events lined up for next month as Omega Pro Sports International returns with not just one but two events in one day slated for December 18, 2020. But before that – 6 days to be exact – the Sanman International Promotions of General Santos City will re-visit Cebu to hold their own bubble boxing – this time in the beautiful seaside city of Talisay.

SanMan Boxing in Talisay.

This writer was informed of this event some 3 weeks back by SanMan boss himself JC Mananquil. They have picked Cebu for their 2nd Bubble Boxing event as most of their newly acquired pugilists are based in the island. Bannering the event will be former ALA stalwarts – Jeo Santisima, Melvin Jerusalem, KJ Cataraja and possibly IBF #1 Bantamweight contender Michael Dasmarinas vs SanMan’s own Roma Rate. The match-ups and opponents are still to be announced. But with the names mentioned bannering this event, looks every inch a world class boxing extravaganza.

The date is December 12, 2020, venue at the Tabunok Sports Complex, Talisay City, Cebu. The SanMan boys are currently deep in their training at the world class EMT Boxing Gym of top boxing trainer Edcel Tonacao of Mandaue City.

Omega returns.

Mandaue City’s Omega Pro Sports International (OPSI) will hold their 2nd and 3rd bubble events on the 18th December 2020. It will be a two-part boxing event as there will be a matinee show starting at 1PM. In the matinee card’s main attraction, Albert Pagara will fight against veteran Virgil Puton. Albert, who is MTK Global’s recent acquisition, will be fighting his first Filipino foe in 3 years, his last being Gadwin Tubigon last December 2013. Supporting main events include fellow former ALA boy Regie Suganob against little-known Robert Ates. Olympian and former world challenger Mark Anthony Barriga supposedly fights in this card however due to health reasons, he pulled out.

In the main show which starts at 7pm, fast rising Pete Apolinar of San Pablo City, Laguna will headline against Danny Tampipi of Tarlac. Supporting bouts include Omega mainstays, world-ranked Christian Araneta, Mark Vicelles, Tomjune Mangubat and Carlo Bacarro. The event will be held at the Omega boxing facility in Mandaue City under the strict bubble concept of the GAB and the IATF.

It looks like Cebu is leading the way in the new normal boxing in the country, reinforcing its former name-tag as the hotbed of Philippine professional boxing. As one well-known boxing announcer used to say “here we go…!” I would say, Cebu, let’s go!
