CEBU CITY, 15-May-2021 – The Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors signed Israeli Grandmaster Nitzan Steinberg as its reinforcement as the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Second Conference which is dubbed as the Wesley So Cup officially starts today.
Cordova finished eighth in the recently concluded All-Filipino Conference which was eventually won by the Laguna Heroes, is hoping to advance deeper in the playoffs following the acquisition of the 23-year-old Steinberg.
Also hoping for a better finish was the Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors which picked Vietnamese IM Thao Nguyen as its reinforcement, the Cebu City Marchers signed up Thai FM Poompong Wiwatanadate as its import and Toledo City Trojans picked Iranian GM Amir Bagheri to bolster the team’s chances.
To date, only the inaugural conference runner-up Camarines Soaring Eagles, San Juan Predators and Zamboanga Sultans, Quezon City Simba’s Tribe, Pasig King Pirates and Caloocan Loadmanna Knights were the other teams who reported their reinforcement.
Camarines will add French lady GM Marie Sebag, San Juan will banner Spanish GM Viktor Moskalenko, Zamboanga will have Brazilian GM Alexandr Fier as its reinforcement, Quezon City will rally behind Singaporean lady player Siew Kai Xin, Pasig will play Singaporean GM Kevin Goh and Mongolian GM Gombosuren Munkhgal alternately and Caloocan goes with Malaysian IM Jimmy Chee-Meng Liew.
The Reinforced conference will follow the same format as the recently concluded All-Filipino Conference.
Before the second conference will officially start, PCAP chairman Michael Angelo Chua will open the conference followed by the special message of GAB commissioner Eduard Trinidad, followed by another message from FIDE Asia Executive Director Toti Abundo, then followed the message of Pasig City mayor Vico Sotto, tournament sponsor and Filipino-American Super GM Wesley So will have his message read by Atty. Ariel Batungbakal, to be followed by the commissioner’s message, the oath of sportsmanship which will be led by WIM Bernadette Galas and the closing remarks by PCAP vice-chairman Ariel Potot.
Slated to pit their wits today were Antipolo vs. San Juan, Caloocan vs. Rizal, Cagayan against Quezon, Cavite plays Pasig, Isabela takes on Olongapo, Laguna trade pieces with Manila, Camarines engages Zamboanga, Cebu to match Toledo, Cordova battles Surigao, Iloilo tackles Palawan, Iriga will try to hack on Negros and Lapu-Lapu will wage war against Mindoro.
