In a startling development early Saturday morning, Sen. Manny Pacquiao announced in all his social media accounts that he will be fighting Errol “The Truth” Spence, the IBF World Welterweight Champion, this coming August 21, 2021, in Las Vegas, Nevada USA.
This announcement has caught the world of boxing by surprise. In recent days, there have been talks of a Mikey Garcia fight which even this writer opined was a much easier and winnable fight for the 42-year-old grizzled great from General Santos City, Philippines. The Mickey Garcia talks apparently bogged down for yet undisclosed reasons. Much earlier also, another anticipated fight, this time against WBO Welterweight champ Terrence Crawford bogged down – according to sources because of financial sharing disagreements.
Spence is younger at 31 years old. He is undefeated and has been the IBF king for 4 years now. He last saw action against Danny Garcia, for which he won via unanimous decision over 12 rounds. Spence is also coming off a horrific near-death car accident last 2019 where many pundits thought he was done with boxing. Miraculously, he was able to recover and continue his reign as the IBF king of the welterweights.
Manny Pacquiao on the other hand last fought WBA Champ Keith Thurman. He dominated the trash-talking erstwhile champ, knocking him down once, before prevailing in a surprise split decision win. Many are saying this Spence fight might also be the great Filipino boxer’s swan song. We are still awaiting an announcement as to regards to that. In the meantime, all roads lead to Las Vegas Nevada USA come August 21, 2021. This fight may turn out to be the biggest fight for 2021.
