Cordova opened its campaign with a thrilling 11-5 to 9-5 victory against Southern Division powerhouse Iloilo Kisela Knights and capped the night with a sweeping victory over Cebu City Machers 15.5 to 5.5.
Cordova Dutchess remained immaculate after five games along with another dynamo Southern team, the French WGM Rachel Sebag-bolstered Camarines Soaring Eagles and Northern Division’s San Juan Predators, which is reinforced by Spanish GM Viktor Moskalenko.
The tough match started with Iloilo City winning the Blitz matches 4.5 to 2.5.
Israeli GM Nitzan Steinberg and homegrown player Michael Joseph Pagaran won their matches against NM Giovanni Mejia and NM John Michael Silvederio in Boards 2 and 7 respectively while another Cordova local boy Allan Pason eked out a draw with Dennis Bernas at Board 6.
However, the Dagami Warriors regrouped and proved unstopped in the Rapid matches as they scored four wins and a draw to beat the Kisela Knights 9-5 in the 15 minutes game.
Steinberg beat GM Joey Antonio in 54 moves using the Sicilian Defence, WIM Bernadette Galas got back with 48 moves win over Cherry Ann Mejia in a Sicilian Defence game, Pason beat Bernas in 66 moves using the London System opening and Pagaran bested Silvederio anew using the Italian game in 36 moves while Merben Roque added a point for a draw with Iloilo’s import Armenian GM Hovhannes Gabuzyan.
Unfortunately for Iloilo, they suffered its second loss in the conference later in the evening while Zamboanga Sultans tallied third win following a 12-9 victory.
The Cebu City Machers on the other hand made it to the winning column after beating Iriga City Oragons 13.5 to 7.5 in the opening game before succumbing to the might of the RiChess Masters-backed Cordova Dutchess in the nightcap.
Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors also split their scheduled games after beating Zamboanga Sultans 12-9 in the first game but failed to sustain the momentum and suffered its second setback in the conference following a 9-12 loss to Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates in the second game.
Lapu-Lapu, Iloilo and Zamboanga are now tied 4th to 6th places with 3-2 win-loss records.
Toledo City Trojans meanwhile picked twin victories to move up behind Cordova Dutchess and Camarines with a 4-1 record.
Toledo City opened the night with a 16-5 win against the Mindoro Tamaraws and followed it up with a 12.5 to 8.5 win over Iriga City.
On Wednesday, the Ariel Potot owned-Cordova Dutchess will try to keep its winning streak going as they play Toledo City in the opening game and capped the night across the Palawan Queen’s Gambit, while Lapu-Lapu City will have a tough assignment against Negros Kingsmen and later against Camarines and Cebu City is hoping to make a jumpstart as they play Zamboanga and Surigao in succession. Toledo City will also play Zamboanga in the nightcap after facing Cordova in the earlier scheduled game. RCM
