Ferdinand Magellan is known as the explorer who led the Spanish expedition in search of the Spice Islands, ended up in the islands now known as the Philippines and met his untimely demise in the shores of Cebu, but there is so much more to his story than what is commonly told.
Gabii sa Kabilin will hold a webinar on May 29, 3 p.m. entitled “Ferdinand Magellan: The Man Beyond the Voyage” with historian and author Dr. Danilo Gerona. It will discuss lesser-known facts about the Portuguese explorer including his life before the expedition.
Dr. Gerona is the director of the Magellan-Elcano Studies Center at Partido State University, and a member of Sevilla 2019-2022, an international council spearheading the celebration of 500 years of the circumnavigation of the world.
It will be streamed on Gabii sa Kabilin’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, as well as the National Quincentennial Committee Facebook page. It will be hosted by the University of Southern Philippines Foundation – Rizaliana Museum.
Those who wish to participate may register at https://forms.gle/8uDN3pX6XTtBTYr26. An e-certificate will be given to participants who will answer both the registration and evaluation form provided before and after the event, respectively.
The webinar is in line with this year’s GSK theme, The Arrival, which commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines, the birth of Christianity in the archipelago, and the victory at Mactan.
Initiated in 2007 by RAFI, Gabii sa Kabilin aims to help preserve local culture and heritage by encouraging Cebuanos to visit museums. It launched its online activities last year at the onset of the pandemic to help make Cebuano culture and heritage more accessible to the public.
