CEBU CITY – The Opon Lapu-Lapu City belongs to the elite four following its fourth-place finish in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) special Tag Team Tuesdays Series One tournament that culminated on Nov. 9.
The Naki Warriors team made up of NM Elwin Retanal, NM Edsel Montoya and Bryle Arellano put up a tough fight but eventually conceded to the mightier PCWorX-San Juan Predators in the battle for third place.
Earlier, Lapu-Lapu defeated Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates in the race to 6 wins tournament that followed a three-minute plus two seconds increment time control, semi-finals to advance to the Division Finals round against the Iloilo Kisela Knights.
Unfortunately, Lapu-Lapu bowed to Iloilo, instead played San Juan in the battle for third place.
Unfortunately, Lapu-Lapu failed to break San Juan in the game for third place and wounded up fourth finishers from among the 12 participating teams. Pasig City King Pirates scalped Iloilo in the championship game to be declared Tag Team Series One Champions.
Lapu-Lapu, Iloilo were joined by Surigao, Toledo City Trojans, Camarines Soaring Eagles and Dakbayan Sa Sugbu (Cebu City Machers) as South Division competitors while Pasig, San Juan, Laguna Heroes, Cagayan Kings, Isabela Knights of Alexander and Rizal Batch Towers were the teams from the North.
After the round-robin elimination, Iloilo copped the No.1 spot in South, followed by Surigao, Lapu-Lapu, and CamSur respectively. Iloilo played the fourth seed CamSur and the 2nd ranked Surigao faced Opon (Lapu-Lapu) in the Division semis while Pasig which topped the North played Cagayan and second seed San Juan collided with Laguna.
Iloilo and Lapu-Lapu defeated their respective opponents while Pasig and San Juan eliminated their opponents to set up the pairings for the Division Finals. RCM
