Wellmade Motors and Development Corporation was given the Philippine Quality Award (PQA) Level 2 recognition by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The company, founded by businessman Dr. Philip N. Tan, is the first to get PQA recognition in Central Visayas.
The PQA recognition was supposed to be done in Malacañang, with the president handing over the trophy since the award is mandated by law. Pandemic restrictions, however, forced DTI to hold the recognition in Cebu.
The awarding last Wednesday, November 17, was attended by Director Lilian Salonga of the DTI Competitiveness Bureau and Assistant Secretary Asteria Caberte.
“The trophy is the result of your perseverance to create a culture of quality in your organization. This milestone is the fruit of your effort and dedication to your management as well as the entire workforce to uphold excellence and quality to your stakeholders,” said Salonga.
Salonga commended Wellmade Motors for getting Level 2 on its first try. “Having this award means the organization has a documented and solid approach to systems-level quality and productivity management,” Salonga said.
Tan said the award meant “our company is at par with the rest of the world,” since the PQA is based on international standards.
“When people come and work with us, they get assured that the product and service that we provide is at par (with global standards). That is why DTI is very careful with awarding this,” Tan said.
Tan said government programs by DTI and the Department of Labor and Employment helped him grow the company he founded.
“Most businessmen would always have the impression that government does nothing except collect taxes…I attended and personally participated in almost all productivity and quality programs of DOLE, learning and building confidence that my small company will someday achieve its competitiveness and growth,” Tan said.
Wellmade Motors and Development Corporation is the first to get PQA recognition in Central Visayas.
DTI Assistant Secretary Asteria Caberte said metalworking is a basic support industry for other companies and Region 7 “made the right entry point” with Wellmade Motors in the PQA Award.
