CEBU CITY – The much anticipated 1st Mactan Open: Barkadahan Para sa Bansa FIDE-rated over-the-board Chess Championships will officially start at 3 PM today at the Solea Resorts and Hotel Mactan in Cordova.
This Richess Masters-organized event will also feature the Philippine National Chess Championships 2021. which will determine who will play for the Philippines in the Asian Indoors competition in Thailand in 2023.
Fide Master Anthony Makinano, NM Jerish John Velarde are among the Cebuano players who will aim to improve their Fide ratings as well as the top cash prize of P50,000 that will be awarded to the champion in this tournament that will follow a 9-Round Swiss System format with 90mins plus 30secs increment time control.
Among the top players who are also vying for the top finish in the cash-rich tournament include Jhonnedel Balquin who is the top seed in this tournament, FM Roel Abelgas, IM Angelo.Young, RCM-backed WIM Bernadette Galas, WFM Cherry Ann Mejia were among the 39 hopefuls who will try to land into the top 10 finishers and special categories that include the best lady performer, under-16, under-14, under-12, under-10, and under-8 categories.
On the national championships event, 13th time National Open titlist GM Joey Antonio will be the target in a very tough field made up GMs John Paul Gomez and Darwin Laylo, WGM Janelle Mae Frayna, IMs Jan Emmanuel Garcia, Paulo Bersamina, Haridas Pascua, Ronald Dableo, Danielel Quizon, Michael Concio and Ricardo de Guzman.
Chess Movement Inc. chairman Dr. Ariel Potot, CPA and NCFP president Prospero Pichay and NCFP Executive.Director GM Jayson Gonzales will grace the Opening ceremony and the first round wi officially start at 4 PM. RCM
