IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay – Titay CKB had their opponents by the neck most of the way, but when the going gets tough, the better prepared Zamboanga City Family Sardines pulled the trick for a 70-64 win in the opening game of the 22nd Araw Ng Sibugay – 1ST GOV. ANN K. HOFER Open Invitational Basketball Tournament at the standing-room-only Capitol Hill Sports Center, here.

Titay, matched the well-oiled Zamboanga City in a nip-and-tuck game which resulted to several lead changes with the diverse CKB squad getting the upper hand most of the way.

The Mayor Titay Leonardo Talania and Councilor Junie Montejo owned squad opened the third period on a 6-2 binge to get a needed separation, but Zamboanga had its own 7-2 run behind the antics of JC Marcelino to keep the current Michael Cenabre mentored squad within reach, 41-40 midway to the third.

Two free throws from Galman Macaraig and a triple from Matthew Parker pulled Titay CKB to a 46-40 lead but Zamboanga answered with their own quick 5-0 spurt with Japs Bautista triple and break-away layup by Keanu Caballero again put the MPBL South Division champs within 45-46 with 2:41 left in the third.

The Titay quintet finished the quarter strong behind the baskets of Sommy Managor and Ik Akpuru as the CKB squad built a 51-47 lead entering the final frame.

Titay CKB started to loss grip of the game in the final four minutes with the score stood at 61-56.

The Zamboanga boys dropped a killer 14-0 run, as the defense of Titay went napping, while its offense went really cold, that accounted mostly to its deafening loss.

With only 41.8 seconds left in the game, the Family Sardines-backed Zamboanga 5 were already unreachable, 70-61. Former TNT Tropang Texter guard Eloy Poligrates tried to salvage whatever was left for Titay CKB with a triple at the 21.3 mark, and could have slashed it further but his final attempt, also from the 3-point area, conked out as time expired.

The loss put Titay CKB in a must win situation in all its remaining three games, but it will be another tall order as they are up against an equally formidable team on its next games.
