INCHEON, South Korea – Just as they are getting the hang of winning, the RP Blu Girls suddenly found themselves in a tough situation and eventually bowed down to the higher-ranked Chinese-Taipei 5-0 in their fourth game of the World Softball Championship 2023 Asia Cup.
Coming into the game oozing with confidence after another sensational 10-0 shutout win over Thailand Monday morning, unknowingly, the Blu Girls were headed into an abyss when they played the world-ranked No.3 Taiwanese team in the afternoon.
The ranked 30 Philippines were at their usual best, but Chinese-Taipei seems like an impenetrable wall as they slowly broke the game of the Blu Girls.
After a scoreless first inning, Taipei scored three runs at the bottom of the second inning with Li Szu-Shih, Chiang Ting-En and a homer by Ku Chia-Hui deep left.
Both teams were scoreless for the next three innings before Li drove her version of a home run, and carried Chen Chia-Yi at the bottom of the sixth.
The Blu Girls tried to salvage the game on their final chance at bat, but the defense of Chinese-Taipei was simply too good as Mary Maguad, Christy Roa and Danica delos Santos were taken out one by one.
Earlier, the RP squad slaughtered Thailand 10-0. The game was cut short at the bottom of the fourth inning by virtue of the Mercy Rule. The game showcased the combined pitching prowess of Kaith Ezra Jalandoni and Glory Alonzo. The excellent hitting skills of the Filipina batters led by Ma. Charlotte Sales and Arianne Vallestero were also on display.
The win over Thailand came at the heels of the Blu Girls’ 2-0 win over the host team South Korea last Sunday.
“The girls showed their grit in the Korea game, and they showed their supreme confidence in the game against Thailand. I am excited for the remainder of the tournament knowing that the team is fully prepared.”, said RP Blu Girls Coach, Randy Dizer
The twin victories catapulted the Philippines to a 3-0 that was snapped mercilessly by Chinese-Taipei. However, WBSC recently announced that they’re giving a wild card for another Asian country to the World Cup, thus making it 4 World Cup slots at stake in the ongoing Asia Cup in Incheon, Korea.
Currently, China and Chinese-Taipei shared the top spot in the team standings with 2-0 win-loss slate each, with the Philippines behind with 3-1 card and host South Korea with 2-2 slate. World No. 2 Japan was still playing against playing Singapore as of this posting.
