Sherwin Tiu is back to lead players vying in the 4th Chess Infinitum Invitational Rapid Tournament

MANILA, Philippines – Inaugural champion Sherwin Tiu will spearhead a strong cast of participants clashing in the 4th Chess Infinitum Invitational Rapid Tournament at the SM Sucat Building B in Paranaque City on Sunday, April 9, 2023.

Tiu looms as the player to beat in this 7-round Swiss system tournament, owing to his impressive showing in the first edition.

The 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment time control format tournament is backed by Cebu chess patron Boojie Lim, the creator of the game, and organized by IM Roderick Nava of Kamatyas Chess Club, offers a top purse of P15,000.

Also seeing action are defending champion Rowel Roque, Richard dela Cruz, Eduardo Campos Jr., Arvin Betonio, Edwin Caballero, Ryan Recososa, Darwin Secorata, Rommel Lucion and Jerome Angelo Aragones.

Other competitors vying for the title includes IM Barlo Nadera, WIM Kylen Joy Mordido, Chester and Mark Gerald Reyes, Freddie and Francis Talaboc, Julian Paul and Jericho Ivan Querubin, Marlon and Alcomedes Constantino, Arjoe and Michelle Loanzon, Jefferson Pascua, Jalbert Vilan, Robvy Jemuel Wong, Kurt William Daantos and Richie Jocson.

“Infinitum, a variation of chess game created by Cebu chess patron Boojie Lim back in the early 2000s. It uses a semi 10 x 10 board and standard chess pieces and uses only six pawns with an additional piece called the wizard on each side,” said IM Nava.

The game, however, was introduced by Lim to the Cebuano Chess players in the late 1990s.

“Cebu chess patron Boojie Lim, former director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and chief executive of Rose Pharmacy Inc., brought back the game for the new generation of players as well as those who have grown to love his invention,” he added. – Marlon Bernardino
