CEBU City, Philippines – Four teams will jock it out in the 2-day “Sir Dodong Junie Martinez CESAFI 2023-2024 Pre-Season Invitational Juniors Basketball Tournament,” at the Don Celestino Martinez Sr. Sports Complex in Bogo City this morning.
The tournament which is named in honor to the late former 4th District Congressman and Bogo City Mayor Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr. will have the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters, University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, University of the Visayas Baby Lancers and the host team City of Bogo Science and Arts Academy Trailblazers playing for the distinction as the first ever winner of the Sir Dodong Junie Martinez CESAFI Pre-Season Champion.
The former mayor, who was the foremost sports patron of Bogo City, was a staunched supporter of his alma mater – the University of San Carlos Warriors, which he helped to a titular finish in 2015 Season.
Last season, the late former Agriculture Under Secretary was instrumental on the entry of CBSAA to CESAFI. The Trailblazers swept all its elimination round assignments only to loss to the eventual champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles in the Finals.
“CBSAA Trailblazers,” the former Bogo City sports patron said last year when www.iNews.Ph asked of what he wanted CBSAA to be known as. “We wanted CBSAA to be the pioneers. We wanted to be the first public school to play in the league. We wanted to showcase that a public school can play in CESAFI and be at par with the other teams.”
Indeed, CBSAA opened the door for Cebu Roosvelt Memorial College and Felipe R. Verallo Foundation College both of Bogo City and the Benedicto College to gain entry to the premier inter-school athletic league in the south. The University of the Philippines Cebu has also entered the league, making CESAFI Seniors competition an 11-team field this year, with the return of Phinma-Southwestern University Cobras into action.
The Juniors competition will also have 11 competing teams with the return of Don Bosco Technological College Greywolves.
Because of the short preparations, the erstwhile Bogo City CESAFI Pre-Season tournament is shortened to just two days, with the four teams playing a single round robin elimination round in the morning and evening.
The champions of the competition will pocket the P40,000 top prize with the other three teams ensured to receive their share of the prize fund. RCM
